Compared to the 3 other entrepreneurs I have researched in my blog
(Harvey Goldsmith, Sean John Combs & Richard Branson), I have managed to
identify some of my abilities, traits, characteristics & weaknesses that I have
or have in common with the 3 entrepreneurs.
Firstly I always learn from my mistakes that I have made. I believe
that in order to succeed, you have to fail at some point in your life. But just
like Richard Branson, I am not afraid to share my mistakes I have made with
other people, and I would also question other people on any mistakes that they
have made to avoid me from making their mistake.
I am also very well organized. I believe that this is a very
important entrepreneurial skill. Regardless whether you’re running a company or
hosting an event, this skill is needed. Harvey Goldsmith is a good example of
someone that uses this ability as he puts on many events for charities. Richard
Branson also acquires this skill as he has over 200 companies in run over a
variety of business industries.
I also have a lot of ambition to succeed in whatever I do. Just like
Sean John Combs, he eats, sleeps & drinks money. The only thing I don’t do
that he does is rap it!
Charisma is another good ability that I possess, and another key
attribute to have in any job. In an interview with Richard Branson, which
showed evidence on many occasions that he has good charisma, Branson talks
about customer service and basically says ‘if you offer great customer service
to a client, it will keep them coming back for more’. I also believe that this
is very true. This skill not only helps give off a good impression to clients,
but also to the people that want to work with you.
However, people too down to earth and nice can sometimes lead to
people taking advantage of you. I would also class this as one of my weaknesses,
which I need to be aware of.
All 3 entrepreneurs and I’m sure many others out there do their part
to help people, whether its through organizing charitable events like Harvey
Goldsmith, helping the environment like Richard Branson, or building a business
school to help younger people have a goal like Sean John Combs. I am also like
to help other people out with their problems in my own way. Obviously putting
on a major charitable event in Hype Park isn’t anything that I can do right
now, but simple things such as offering advise, helping solve other peoples
issues, or even setting up a small charitable event (which I will be looking at
starting at some point this year) is a small step in the right direction, and
will also give off a good reputation to other people.
I also have the ability to work well individually or in a team.
There are some jobs out there that may require help from other people. I am
very easy to get along with and I have a great charisma (as stated earlier). I
do however have weaknesses with regards to working in a team. If people aren’t
pulling their weight and doing their part in the team, I would find it
difficult to give them a formal discussion, especially if I get along with that
person or class them as a friend. But business is business and this would have
to be a weakness I would have to overcome.
Negotiation skills are also another important skill that is used in
virtually every business deal. If there’s that possibility that you could save
money or get more stock at a good price, good negation skills will be a key
ability to have. This is probably one of my biggest weaknesses as I am not very
good at negotiating at all. This is however another weakness that I would need
to work on for future purposes.
I can cope well in difficult/stressful situations. If you are
running a number of major businesses, or hosting an event when last minute
problems may arise, having difficulty in resolving any problems will not help
and could even make the situation worse.
Finally, I believe being a risk taker in like is another key factor
to succeed. Just like Harvey Goldsmith’s example of risk taking from his event,
(Garden Parties at crystal palace ball) Harvey booked for 2 artists he couldn’t
afford, but took the risk and successfully paid for the artist via the success
of ticket sales made from the event. Nothing will come easy and mistakes will
be made. But if you don’t take a risk, you could miss out on something that
could benefit you and leave you wondering, ‘what if?’
